My Grandmother Heated With Fire. I Heat With Light. We Both Were Right.
My grandmother in Prekmurje had one tile stove in the middle of the house. Thick bricks, fire inside, warm on all sides for 12 hours. No dust blowing, no noise, no hot air at the ceiling. You sat next to it, you felt warmth on your cheek from two meters away, even if air was 17 degrees. Clothes dried on it, bread rose on it, kids leaned on it. It heated walls, floor and people, not air. It was perfect.
Then we replaced it with gas radiators because radiators looked modern. We traded bricks that store 500 Wh per cubic meter for air that stores 0.34 Wh. We traded radiant warmth that goes straight to skin for convective hot air that goes straight to ceiling. We started heating spiders and calling it progress.

We Went Back To Physics
Sun does not heat air. Sun shines through 10 kilometers of cold air at minus 50 degrees and only becomes heat when it hits your face, a stone, a wall. That is infrared.
An infrared ceiling panel does exactly the same. It is a white plate, 2 cm thin, 60×120 cm, 700W for a 14 sqm room, 7 kilos, 4 screws, one cable. No water, no pipes, no boiler, no chimney, no annual service.
When it is on it shines invisible light. Air does not feel it. You feel it in 60 seconds on your skin like a soft fireplace. Your floor feels it and goes from 16 degree ice to 23 degree barefoot warm in 15 minutes. Your outside wall feels it and goes from 14 degree cold to 22 degree warm to touch in 30 minutes. Your bed, your sofa, your towel feel it.
Now you live inside that old tile stove. Every surface radiates warmth back to you from all sides. Your body which is 36.6 degrees stops losing its own heat to cold walls. That is why at 20 degrees air with infrared you feel warmer than at 24 degrees air with radiators. We measured it with clients. They set thermostat lower because they feel warm sooner. Two degrees less is 14 percent less energy every day.
Why Fresh Air Used To Be A Luxury
With radiators you never opened windows in winter because you knew. You open for 5 minutes, you lose everything. That 27 degree cloud at the ceiling disappears in 60 seconds. Walls still 14 cold, you need an hour to reheat. So you keep windows closed, air gets stuffy, you get headache, humidity drops to 30 percent, dust burns on hot radiator and that is that dry winter smell in your nose.
My grandmother opened windows every morning, even at minus 10, for 15 minutes. House stayed warm. Because heat was in bricks, not in air.
Infrared gives you that back. Open all windows for 10 minutes. You throw out air but heat stays in floor and walls. Close windows and in 3 minutes air is warm again because warm walls warm it instantly. You can ventilate as much as you want. No guilt, no hour of reheating.
What Happened To Mold And Dust
Tile stove had no fan. It did not blow dust. Radiator is a dust pump. Cold air to radiator, hot air to ceiling, cold down, endless loop that lifts dust from floor, burns it on 60 degree metal, throws it into lungs.
Infrared has zero air movement. No draft, no dust flying, no burning smell. Humidity stays at healthy 50 percent, skin stops itching, throat stops scratching in morning.
And mold. Tile stove kept outside wall warm because it radiated directly at it. Radiator heats air that never warms that wall behind wardrobe. Wall stays 14 degrees, warm humid air from cooking and shower touches it, drops water like cold beer bottle sweating, wall is wet 24 hours, mold grows. You bleach it, it comes back because wall stays cold.

Bedroom 19 for sleep, 22 for 20 minutes before alarm so floor warm when you step barefoot. Kids room 21 from 14 to 20. Office weekdays only. Guest room 15.5 all winter anti mold for 6 cents a day. Weekend house has no water inside so nothing can freeze and burst. Leave at minus 15 for 3 months off. One hour before arrival tap ON, arrive to warm floors and bathroom mirror that never fogs because it is warm glass at 45 degrees.
It pulses 20 minutes on, 40 minutes off because warm walls keep radiating when off. Effective 2.5 hours per day, 1.75 kWh per day per room, 0.44 euro per day per room, whole winter per room about 79 euros. No gas fixed fee, no boiler service 150 euros, no chimney, no gas leak risk, silent, maintenance free, 25 year warranty. White, black glass, mirror, or your family photo printed on it that heats living room.
My grandmother was right. Heat walls, floor and people. Not air. We just needed 70 years and a little light to remember.
